Light Up Blue for Autism

Leolan Academy is a start up non profit organisation specialising in the development and training of individuals affected by autism and related disorders.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a devastating neurological and biological disorder that typically affects children between the ages of 18 months to five years of age. In the USA, Autism currently affects 1 in every 91 children. In South Africa 1 in 160 school children between the ages of 6 and 12 have an Autism Spectrum Disorder? Autism affects each individual differently and at different levels of severity. Some people with autism are severely affected, cannot speak, require constant one-on-one care, and are never able to live independently. While others who have less severe symptoms, can communicate and eventually acquire the necessary skills to live on their own.

Typically, autism affects individuals in five key areas:

  •         Communication (verbal and non-verbal)
  •         Social skills
  •          Behaviour
  •          Learning
  •         Medical issues

Bringing up a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder also has a significant effect on the family. Enormous pressure is placed on parents, siblings, grandparents as even every day social activities and outings can be extremely difficult and stressful.

At present there is no medical ‘cure’ but early diagnosis followed by structured education and behavior management intervention will ensure that each child achieves their full potential.

This is very costly and is not affordable for most families.

The aim of Leolan Academy is to:

  • Create a general awareness about what autism is
  • Provide support, information and counselling to families affected by autism
  • Provide world class education and behaviour management interventions to ensure that children affected by autism reach their full potential
  • Establish a farm based learning academy and place of acceptance, healing and growth for individuals affected by autism
  • Work synergistically with other special needs schools, institutions, families, agencies, and AutismSA to make a difference in lives of individuals affected by autism

We would like your assistance in creating awareness about autism and possibly in raising funds to help our early intervention centre for individuals affected by autism. This main aim of this initiative would be to assist us in raising awareness on what autism is, where to get help, and to increase public awareness and empathy with regards to individuals and families affected by autism. So the next time we see a child having a tantrum in a shopping mall or a parent running after a child you may look at them from a wider perspective.

The “Light it Up Blue for Autism” :

  • To raise awareness about autism

Many people do not know what autism is. Despite the frightening fact that in every hour in South Africa 1 child with autism will be born (AutismSA).

So often children, and adults, often go undiagnosed and untreated.

We kindly ask the community and local business of Mossel Bay to each sponsor the amount of R1500.00 for Autism awareness month.

For every R1500.00 we are sponsored, a R1000.00 will go to Leolan Academy, kids with special needs and R500.00 to the various bakeries who will bake blue cupcakes.  The cupcakes will then be distributed around Mossel Bay to raise awareness for and about Autism.

As Autism affects so many lives, we ask that the schools and community of Mossel Bay show there support every Friday for the month of April, by wearing something blue. All our sponsors and bakeries will appear in the Mossel Bay advertiser for their generous support.
